Tax Audit Applicability for Businesses in India: Turnover Limits, Conditions and Documents

Tax audit applicability in India is an important compliance consideration for business owners, professionals, and companies. Understanding the applicable turnover limits, cash transaction conditions, and documentation requirements helps businesses prepare their accounts accurately and avoid last-minute compliance issues.

A tax audit examines financial records to verify compliance with applicable income tax provisions. For businesses in Kerala and across India, determining whether a tax audit is mandatory should be part of regular financial planning, not a task postponed until the filing deadline.

What Is Tax Audit Applicability in India?

Tax audit applicability refers to the circumstances under which a taxpayer must have their accounts audited by a qualified accountant under income tax law. For financial year 2025–26, Section 44AB of the Income-tax Act, 1961, governs the requirement. From tax year 2026–27, Section 63 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, provides the corresponding provisions. The applicable law depends on the tax year being reviewed.

Tax Audit Turnover Limits for Businesses and Professionals

For businesses, the general tax audit threshold is annual sales, turnover, or gross receipts exceeding ₹1 crore. However, the threshold increases to ₹10 crore when both cash receipts and cash payments do not exceed 5% of their respective annual totals.

For example, a trading business with annual turnover of ₹6 crore may qualify for the higher threshold if it satisfies both cash transaction conditions. A business with cash receipts exceeding the prescribed limit cannot automatically claim this benefit simply because most of its transactions occur digitally.

For professionals, the general threshold is gross receipts exceeding ₹50 lakh. Professional income, business turnover, and gross receipts should be classified correctly before determining audit applicability.

These thresholds do not cover every situation. Presumptive taxation provisions and other statutory conditions can make a tax audit necessary even when a taxpayer’s turnover is below the general business threshold.

When Is a Tax Audit Mandatory?

Business owners should review more than their annual turnover before deciding whether an audit is required.

Cash transaction limits: Businesses seeking the ₹10 crore threshold must assess cash receipts and cash payments separately against the 5% limits.

Presumptive taxation: Taxpayers declaring profits below the prescribed presumptive income may face audit requirements depending on the applicable scheme, eligibility conditions, and previous tax history.

Business structure and activities: Companies, partnerships, proprietorships, and professionals may have different accounting and statutory compliance obligations. A tax audit assessment should consider the taxpayer’s specific circumstances rather than turnover alone.

Early assessment allows businesses to identify compliance gaps and organise supporting records before preparing the audit report.

Documents Required for a Tax Audit

Preparing complete financial records makes the audit process more efficient. Businesses should organise the following documents according to their accounting period and business activities:

The exact documentation required depends on the business structure, nature of operations, and applicable reporting requirements. Maintaining these records throughout the year is more effective than reconstructing financial information at the last moment.

Tax Audit Reports and Filing Compliance

For financial year 2025–26, the applicable tax audit reporting framework uses Forms 3CA or 3CB, together with Form 3CD, as relevant. For tax year 2026–27, the Income-tax Act, 2025, introduces Form 26 under the new framework.

The applicable form and filing deadline should be verified for the relevant tax year. Businesses should not assume that the same reporting forms apply to every year.
